Bible Study                                                                                                               23rd September, 2015.
Series:                        The Epistle to the Hebrews
Topic:             The Introduction of the Book of Hebrews
Text:               Hebrews 1 - 13

AUTHOR:      The writer of this letter did not identify himself, but he was obviously well known to the original recipients. Though, for a long time (400-1600C.AD), the book was commonly called ‘the Epistle of Paul to the Hebrews’. Why? Simply because there is no disharmony between the teaching of Hebrews and that of Paul’s letter, though the emphasis and writing styles are uniquely different.
·         Barnabas and/or Appolos have not one time or another mentioned also as the author as both have notable intellectual knowledge of the scriptures and the Jewish traditions.
Date: Not known also. Probably written before the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in AD 70.

RECIPIENTS:    Primarily to Jewish converts who were familiar with the OT and who were being tempted to revert to Judaism or to Judaism the gospel ( Gal 2:14)

PURPOSE:  The letter was written to a group of Christians, faced with increasing opposition, and were in danger of abandoning the Christian faith. The writer encourages them:          To explain that Jesus Christ was all the Jewish believers needed – faith in Him was far superior to their old Jewish religion.
The letter opened up the following facts:
·         Introduction:   Christ the Complete Revelation of God (Heb 1:1-3)
·         Christ’s superiority over the angels    (Heb 1:4-14)
·         Christ’s superiority over Moses          (Heb 3:1-6)
·         The superiority of Christ’s priesthood            (Heb 4:14; 5-7)
·         The superiority of Christ’s covenant   (Heb 8:1-9, 22)
·         The superiority of Christ’s sacrifice    (Heb 9:23, - 10)
·         The primacy of faith   (Heb 11:1-12, 29)
·         Pleasing God   (Heb 13:1-19)
·         Closing prayer (Heb 13:20-21)
·         Final words      (Heb 13:22-25)
